Biography

João Quinteiro completed his undergraduate degree in Composition at the University of Aveiro, where he studied with João Pedro Oliveira, Isabel Soveral and Evgueni Zouldikine. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he simultaneously pursued a Master’s in Philosophy, specialising in Aesthetics, at FCSH – Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and a Master’s in Composition at the University of Aveiro. He studied with the composer Emmanuel Nunes, attending seminars at the Gulbenkian Foundation and at Casa da Música in Porto, and with Beat Furrer at the Kunstuniversität in Graz. He is currently working on his doctoral project in Artistic Studies – Art and Mediations. In this context, he became an Integrated Researcher at CESEM – FCSH at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in cooperation with the Kunstuniversität Graz and the Fondazione Archivio Luigi Nono, under the supervision of Professor Paula Gomes Ribeiro and the composer Beat Furrer.

Since 2017, he has been on the Board of the Portuguese Association of Composers. In this context, he was part of the Artistic Direction of projects such as MUSIVUS, the IpC – Interpreters for Composers project, and CROMA – Oeiras Contemporary Music Cycle.

Since 2014, he has been a lecturer in Analysis and Composition Techniques, History of Music, Physics of Sound, and Contemporary Music Ensemble Classes.

In 2022, he founded the ensemble “Concrète [Lab] Ensemble”, of which he is resident conductor and Artistic Director.

He is a regular speaker at conferences, with a particular focus on research into contemporary music. He regularly collaborates with soloists and performers, including Henrique Portovedo (saxophone), André Correia (saxophone), Marco Fernandes (percussion), Fernando Brites (accordion), Mrika Sefa (pianist), Francisco Cipriano, Rui Antunes (violin), Alex Wait (pianist), Sinem Tas (director), Teresa Doblinger (choreographer) and Tiago Barreiros (choreographer/director).

His music has been performed, commissioned and recorded by national ensembles and performers such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Ensemble 20/21, GMCL, OpuSpiritum Ensemble, Duo Sigma, Astrus Duo, Kodu PG, Ipsis Duo, Duo Nada Contra, Concrète [Lab] Ensemble, Miso Music Portugal, and by international ensembles such as Mise-en Ensemble, Vertixe Sonora, Creative Collision Project, Schallfeld Ensemble and Ensemble Recherche.
