Pedro Lima has established himself as one of the most active, challenging and pertinent voices in the context of national and international contemporary music.
His music seeks to explore sound universes typical of an eclectic milieu, adjacent to someone who grew up listening to electronic music, hip-hop and was part of a progressive rock band during his formative years. So-called classical composition has proven to be the perfect blank canvas, and there he has materialised a series of timbral, harmonic and structural “investigations”, with his scores manifesting unique and extravagant ideas that assume different forms and expressions depending on the context in which they are intended to exist.
The Portuguese composer’s music has evolved in line with the contrasting projects he has created and participated in. From opera to electronic music, via community projects and various fusion experiments, the intention of placing a single label on such a unique voice – which has emancipated itself above all by virtue of its versatility – becomes redundant. A composer who shapes himself within the complex and stimulating socio-digital environment in which we live.
His monographic album featuring the most relevant works he has written in recent years was released in early 2024 and is titled Talkin(g) About My Generation by the label Artway/NEXT. It won Best Classical and Erudite Music Album at the 7th edition of the Vodafone PLAY Awards in 2025. An original work whose pieces/songs meditate on the generational phenomenon in which he himself is situated: conflicts, politics, accelerationism, the internet, memes, life in the digital jungle and the conquest of space.
Winner of the Composers’ Prize from the Portuguese Society of Authors for the work (…) e tu, de mim voaste; young composer-in-residence at Casa da Música, where he composed Talking About my Generation for the Remix Ensemble – a work that was later awarded and recommended in the under-30 category at the International Rostrum of Composers held in Serbia in 2021. In 2024, again at the International Rostrum of Composers, this time in Vilnius, Lithuania, his work Como se fosse um filho was again awarded and recommended in the under-30 category.
Beyond his creative work, Pedro Lima has been an important voice endowed with an “activist” spirit concerning contemporary creation, culture, and the due focus and investment that we must politically and socially attribute to it. As a result, he is a member of the Grupo de Reflexão do Futuro (Future Reflection Group), where he meets with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, together with other young people from various fields who have carried out pertinent work on structural and essential issues for civil society. He regularly participates in podcasts, interviews and events aimed at dissecting and exploring the theme of creativity and how creative thinking impacts progress in our life stories.
