Sérgio Azevedo was born in Coimbra in 1968. He studied with Fernando Lopes-Graça and Constança Capdeville and completed the Composition course at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa with top marks.
He has won national and international prizes, including the United Nations Prize, the Authors’ Prize (SPA) and the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble Composition Prize, and his works are regularly commissioned and performed by prestigious performers and orchestras, featuring on more than 60 CDs.
He has published five books: A Invenção dos Sons, Olga Prats – Um Piano Singular, Christopher Bochmann: Sem música a vida seria um erro and Uma Viagem pela Música Clássica, and since 1993, he has produced hundreds of programmes for RTP – Antena 2, currently (2026) presenting Ao Sabor da Corrente.
In 2021, he created an annual course on classical music at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and is frequently invited to comment on concerts, also having extensive experience in music dissemination. He also collaborates with various newspapers, including Público and JN. He has served on several music juries, including, outside classical music, the presidency of the prestigious José Afonso Prize since 2010.
As a pianist, he has performed dozens of recitals in Portugal and abroad (the Netherlands, Mozambique, France and the USA).
Sérgio Azevedo holds a PhD from the University of Minho and has been a professor at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa since 1993.
