Biography

The soprano Jennifer Smith (1945), of English origin, was born in Lisbon and completed her musical studies at the Conservatório Nacional, continuing her training in London from 1971 with the support of a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. She specialized particularly in the French repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, although she also performed works from the 19th and 20th centuries.

She appeared frequently at some of Europe’s leading venues, including the Royal Opera, Wigmore Hall, English National Opera, and Queen Elizabeth Hall, and also gave recitals with the baritone Olaf Bär and the pianist Geoffrey Parsons. In Portugal, she collaborated regularly with the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and with the Segréis de Lisboa. She worked with internationally renowned musicians and ensembles, and made more than 40 recordings with major labels.1
