Biography

The baritone José de Freitas (1937–2024), born in Funchal, began his studies in 1969 at the Conservatório de Música do Porto in the class of Isabel Mallaguerra, later transferring to the Conservatório Nacional in Lisbon, where he studied with Álvaro Benamor and Helena Pina Manique in the Opera class and in the advanced Voice program.

Between 1975 and 1977, he furthered his training in Paris under the guidance of Elisabeth Luchnikowa. Among the distinctions he received during this period, notable is the first prize at the Leopold-Bellan International Competition in 1977.

He made his debut in 1975 at the Teatro da Trindade in the role of Uberto in La serva padrona, and subsequently performed in theaters throughout the country. Alongside his operatic career, he also appeared frequently in recitals and concerts, collaborating with major Portuguese musical institutions.1
