Biography

The tenor Vasco Gil (1936–2021), born in Lisbon, studied voice at the Conservatório Nacional with Marietta Amstad and Ans Biermann, as well as at the Juventude Musical Portuguesa with Merope Foresta, and privately with José de Morais Pereira.

He made his debut in 1960 at the Teatro da Trindade in the play Leonor Teles by António Lopes Ribeiro, with music by Frederico de Freitas (starring Eunice Muñoz). In 1962, he made his debut at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky. In 1964, he was engaged by the Opera Forum Company in the Netherlands, where he performed successfully in several cities, as well as in West Germany.

After returning to Lisbon in 1967, he performed on various occasions at the Teatro da Trindade and other venues, reappearing at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in 1976, a stage to which he returned in subsequent seasons until 1985, when he retired from his operatic career.1
