At a rally in operatic style, a charismatic leader and his faithful follower and most submissive collaborator celebrate the sonic purification of a nation. Opera, a symbol of excellence and tradition, is placed at the center of a cultural liberation project, in the name of harmony and the common good. But, as in all maneuvers of “cultural purification,” internal contradictions threaten to undermine the operatic leader’s project.
