Synopsis

D. Sancho, a mysterious Spanish nobleman in his early twenties, is taken in by D. Guterre Lopes after suffering an accident while riding in Coimbra. Rumors circulate that the knight’s hands possess a malevolent power, but nothing prevents the young man from approaching the daughter of his protector, D. Beatriz.

About the opera

Based on the poem by Eugénio de Castro (1869-1944) which narrated the story of the stranger, Ruy Coelho (1889-1986) composed, in 1927, the opera O Cavaleiro das Mãos Irresistíveis. It was performed in Portugal and Spain and warmly acclaimed by audiences and critics in both countries. More recently, in 2015, this opera was staged by MPMP Património Musical Vivo at the Teatro Municipal de Almada and the Teatro Municipal do Porto.
