Sonic Rumble with Green Mustard emerges as a sonic territory in which noise is not a residue of silence, but a primordial force that precedes any structured form of music. The “rumble”—that subterranean depth of vibration—does not merely disturb the surface; it moves through space and body as a physical phenomenon, as if sound were gravity and weight, and we merely particles orbiting around it.
The “green mustard”—both title and metaphor—suggests an energy in fermentation: it is not merely seasoning, but a vector of reaction; not simply a color, but a field of tension between nature and culture, between the organic and the technological. This green is not rest; it is impulse, a nerve in combustion, a primal force that drives acoustic materials to collide, to friction, to generate new states of intensity.
Here, narrative does not unfold through cause and effect, but through pulses. Each percussive strike acts as both fracture and fissure—a cut that is also an opening. Voices do not declaim fixed words; they emerge as flows of energy, lines of tension that transform into sound and dissolve into silence. The chorus is not a traditional chorus, but a vibrating mass, a collective organism that responds in real time to noise and reconfigures the audience’s listening.
In this opera, the percussionist is not merely a performer, but a catalyst. João Pedro Lourenço shapes percussion as a sonic landscape, as a field of forces that molds the space. João Reis’s narration does not explain, but projects additional layers of meaning, functioning as a texture between rhythmic gesture and the electricity of processing. Real-time granular processing—masterfully integrated—inscribes the digital into the body of the score, extending sound beyond its original organic form.
The stage becomes both battlefield and point of convergence: noise becomes subject, sound becomes perception, and perception becomes action. The audience does not simply watch—they are traversed by the performance as if by an invisible field of forces. Each vibration, each micro-tension, arises from the interweaving of materials and bodies, demanding a mode of listening that is also a physical experience.
Sonic Rumble with Green Mustard offers no conclusions. Instead, it creates an environment of continuous resonance—a space in which music and noise are not opposites, but aspects of the same pulsating fabric.
