Biography

Dimitris Andrikopoulos was born in 1971 in Larissa, Greece. He began his composition studies in the Netherlands, in Rotterdam with Klaas de Vries, which he completed in May 2004, and at the same time was awarded the Composition Prize of the Rotterdam School of Music and Dance.

He was selected as an Active Participant for the Centre Acanthes 2005 in Metz, where he worked with W. Rihm, P. Dusapin and A. Solbiati. His work Nyx for orchestra was performed at the Final Concert by the Orchestre National de Lorraine.

He has collaborated with various ensembles, including the Asko Ensemble, Mondrian Quartet, Remix Ensemble, ARTéfacts Ensemble, Nederlands Ballet Orkest, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Athens National Orchestra, Colors Contemporary Music Group, !Ynx Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra of Matosinhos, Drumming Percussion Group, among others.

In May 2002, he won First Prize in the NOG Competition for Young Composers with his work Antiparathesis for Violin and Orchestra. In 2010, he was awarded the Centre for Composition and Associated Studies Prize from the University of Birmingham for the work Metamorphoses I for Ensemble. In 2012, he received the ITEA / Harvey Phillips Award for Excellence in Composition for the work Anathema I. He was Artist in Residence in 2013 at CCC, Caldas da Rainha.

His works have been presented in various countries, including Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, France, England, Norway, Germany, the United States, Colombia, Mexico, among others, as a result of commissions from various artistic organisations, such as the Foundation for Contemporary Creation (Netherlands), Flanders Festival, 1st Cello Biennale / Amsterdam Proms, Guimarães 2012 / European Capital of Culture, Onassis Foundation, among others.

In 2013, he completed his PhD in Composition at the University of Birmingham.

Since 2004, he has been a lecturer in composition at the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo (ESMAE) of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Technical-Scientific Council of ESMAE and, between 2015 and 2017, held the position of Director of the Music Department at ESMAE. From September 2023, he is Coordinator of the Composition Area at ESMAE, as well as Coordinator of the International Relations Office at ESMAE.

Between December 2021 and January 2023, he was a Visiting Scholar in the Arts and Humanities Area at NYU‑Abu Dhabi.

He is an active member of CESEM (Centre for the Study of Music) at NOVA University of Lisbon, with main research interests in Composition, as well as the study of the possibilities of extending the techniques of traditional Western musical instruments in combination with new technologies.
