Biography

The tenor Carlos Guilherme (1945) was born in Maputo (formerly Lourenço Marques), where he began his musical studies and his career as a singer, initially within a light and popular repertoire, notably in collaboration with Mozambican radio. He later moved to Rhodesia, where he studied voice with Greta Muir and made his debut with the Salisbury Opera Company, performing the role of Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera by Verdi. He subsequently settled in Portugal, studying with John Labarge at the Algarve Regional Conservatory (1979–1980) and performing publicly in various venues across the country in events organized by the school.¹

In Portugal, he made his operatic debut in 1981 at the Cine-Teatro Lido in Amadora, singing the role of Mr. Pierre in A vingança da cigana, and shortly afterward at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos as Malcolm in Verdi’s Macbeth. He remained a resident singer at this theater until 1992, performing numerous leading roles. He also furthered his training through advanced courses offered by the institution, working with Gino Becchi, Ettore Campogalliano, Claude Thiolass, Marimí del Pozo, and Regina Resnik. He collaborated regularly with the Círculo Portuense de Ópera and performed in various parts of Europe, as well as in the United States, Brazil, Israel, and China.²

Over the course of his operatic career, he performed 37 leading roles in more than 50 operas. In 1984, he was awarded the Nova Gente Trophy (for lyric artists), and in 1985 the Tomás Alcaide Prize. In addition to his operatic work, he was also active in popular music, including earning a Gold Record for the album Canções de amor, which brought him recognition among a broader audience.³
