“The seventh creation of the Companhia de Ópera de Setúbal, Mautempo em Portugal, is the 1st of four original operas inspired by Portuguese Constitutions. With music by Eurico Carrapatoso, libretto by Miguel Jesus, musical and artistic direction by Jorge Salgueiro, visuality by Rita Melo; corporeality by Iolanda Rodrigues and communication and image by Maria Madalena.
It premiered on July 7, 8, and 9, 2023, at the Fórum Municipal Luísa Todi and was repeated on July 22 of the same year at the Centro Cultural Vila Flor in Guimarães with the Orquestra do Norte.
A young anarchist sows revolution: chaos, wars. Two rival composers, Marcos Portugal and Domingos Bomtempo, discuss their art and aesthetics. On the street, there is a country caught between the French invasions, the independence of Brazil, the war between liberals and absolutists, and the first Portuguese Constitution. In a breathtaking, powerful, and magical staging, the Companhia de Ópera de Setúbal brings together in its cast three of the greatest Portuguese baritones of today (André Henriques, Diogo Oliveira, and João Merino) and the always surprising Coro Setúbal Voz.”¹
