About the opera

“Within the scope of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, an original opera entitled Por todos nós will be presented, with a libretto by João Lourenço and Vera San Payo de Lemos, based on the novel Os Memoráveis by Lídia Jorge, with music by Eurico Carrapatoso, staging by João Lourenço, and musical direction by João Paulo Santos.
In Os Memoráveis (2014), the writer Lídia Jorge revisits the 25th of April, its protagonists, and the myths of the Revolution from the perspective of three young people who, 30 years after the events, seek to understand not only the revolutionary drive but also what it became in the construction of democracy and the society in which they now find themselves. Unfolding as a historical investigation, carried out by the generation of the children who, despite the distance imposed by time, are implicated in a network of affections with the preceding generation, the plot of Os Memoráveis offers a set of profound reflections on the 25th of April and its resonances. The diversity of perspectives and the temporal distance allow a critical light to be cast on History. The various discourses, in multiple voices, are articulated in a polyphonic construction. The theme of the Revolution develops in variations that express moments of consonance and dissonance, euphoria and dysphoria, characteristic of a time of change. The aim is to activate the memory of what the 25th of April 1974 meant and to rescue the hope of those days as an inspiring force for building a better world.”¹
